I spent Christmas sleeping because I drove from New Orleans to Jacksonville, FL in one shot. After that I drove to my friend’s house and having been recuperating from the drive. I leave to go back on the road and throughout Florida Tuesday.
Great things have been happening and I’m really excited for the website. I tried eBay and currently have two auctions up at eBay but both times have generated no leads or sales so I think I’m going to dump eBay and use only my SEM methods. Nicola, one of the artists I’m working with has made two beautiful belly dancing headdresses and I can’t wait to showcase them with her bio. An idea came to me as I was looking at them. I’m going to create an Artist page displaying the artist’s picture and bio.
C Net News Published: August 1, 2007

WASHINGTON--A congressional panel on Wednesday (8/1/07) voted, against the Bush administration's wishes, to shield journalists including advertising-supported bloggers from having to reveal their confidential sources in many situations.

By a voice vote only after politicians spent nearly two hours airing various misgivings, the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee approved an amended version of the Free Flow of Information Act.

In response to concerns raised by the Bush administration and other politicians, the revised bill attempts to exclude the "casual blogger" from reaping those benefits by stipulating the protections apply only to those who derive "financial gain or livelihood" from the journalistic activity, Boucher said Wednesday. That broad rule could, however, include part-time writers who receive even a trickle of revenue from Google Ads or Blogads.com.

The Bush administration has continually opposed passage of such a measure, arguing the most recent House effort's approach is so sweeping that it could imperil national security and federal criminal investigations. Currently there is no federal shield law.

The bill defines the practice of journalism as "gathering, preparing, collecting, photographing, recording, writing, editing, reporting or publishing of news or information that concerns local, national or international events or other matters of public interest for dissemination to the public."

In an age in which it's relatively easy and inexpensive to slap advertisements on blogs and meet the "financial gain" standard, several politicians questioned on Wednesday whether that language will make much of a difference. Anyone "could start a blog and request advertising on that blog, and whether they get it or not, would be considered a journalist under this bill," Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said before voting against the bill.

Such a definition "would potentially encompass millions of people who blog or change the manner in which they blog (to gain the privilege)," said Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), adding that the shield is "far too broad and far too easily gained for me to support that language."

Both Boucher and Pence said they sympathized with those complaints and planned to work on changing the definition further before the bill goes to a vote in the full House. Conyers proposed assembling a "working group" to work out the differences. The bill's supporters had previously resolved to leave it up to the courts to refine the journalist definition as necessary, rather than running the risk of excluding certain people by narrowing the scope beforehand.

With Congress scheduled to depart for its summer recess at week's end and lingering disagreements over the bill's approach, it's unclear whether the bill will move ahead anytime soon.

This is very true, please read and pass on to your family and friends. Don't want this to happen, although it is already taken place in other places in the world, let's not have it happen here.

SATAN'S MEETING: (Read even if you're busy)

Satan called a worldwide convention of demons.

In his opening address he said,

"We can't keep Christians from going to church."

"We can't keep them from reading their Bibles and knowing the truth."

"We can't even keep them from forming an intimate relationship with their saviour."

"Once they gain that connection with Jesus, our power over them is broken."

"So let them go to their churches; let them have their covered dish dinners, BUT steal their time, so they don't have time to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ.."

"This is what I want you to do," said the devil:

"Distract them from gaining hold of their Saviour and maintaining that vital connection throughout their day!"

"How shall we do this?" his
demons shouted.

"Keep them busy in the non-essentials of life and invent innumerable schemes to occupy their minds," he answered.

"Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow."

"Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6-7 days each week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty lifestyles."

"Keep them from spending time with their children."

"As their families fragment, soon, their homes will offer no escape from the pressures of work!"

"Over-stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still, small voice."

"Entice them to play the radio or cassette player whenever they drive." To keep the TV, VCR, CDs and their PCs going constantly in their home and see to it that every store and restaurant in the world plays non-biblical music constantly."

"This will
jam their minds and break that union with Christ."

"Fill the coffee tables with magazines and newspapers."

"Pound their minds with the news 24 hours a day."

"Invade their driving moments with billboards."

"Flood their mailboxes with junk mail, mail order catalogs, sweepstakes, and every kind of newsletter and promotional offering free products, services and false hopes.."

"Keep skinny, beautiful models on the magazines and TV so their husbands will believe that outward beauty is what's important, and they'll become dissatisfied with their wives. "

"Keep the wives too tired to love their husbands at night."

"Give them headaches too! "

"If they don't give their husbands the love they need, they will begin to look elsewhere." (adultery)

"That will fragment their families
quickly!"

"Give them Santa Claus to distract them from teaching their children the real meaning of Christmas."

"Give them an Easter bunny so they won't talk about his resurrection and power over sin and death."

"Even in their recreation, let them be excessive."

"Have them return from their recreation exhausted."

"Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on God's creation. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, plays, concerts, and movies instead."

"Keep them busy, busy, busy!"

"And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences."

"Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek power from Jesus."

"Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for the good of the cause."

"It will work!"

"It will work!"

It was quite a plan!

The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere to get busier and more rushed, going here and there.

Having little time for their God or their families.

Having no time to tell others about the power of Jesus to change lives.

I guess the question is, has the devil been successful in his schemes?

You be the judge!!!!!

Does "BUSY" mean: B-eing U-nder S-atan's Y-oke?

Please pass this on, if you aren't too BUSY!

• Personal opinions on business related software / gadgets / products
• Personal opinions on business related events or upcoming events
• Views on local non business events (no adult or edgy events - sorry). Events that are located near business centers / gallerias ect where business people could walk to or drive a short distance to (any city/state - but must be stated at the top of the article)
• Anything business related – any business / industry (non adult / edgy)
• Topic ????

I am open to suggestions

If interested pls comment or send me a message. I will be investing my own personal income towards this project so I am taking it seriously. If it becomes successful I will move into a money generating phase.

The site will be available between Oct. 2nd to 5th 2006

I’ve got a problem and I really need advice from this group.

It seems that someone is going around to various blogs (perhaps automated) and putting in my name, home phone number, and link to my site as comment spam on various blogs. I have a pretty good idea who’s doing it (not their name, etc., yet – that’s under investigation) and why.

The problem is that this is totally antithetical to everything I’m about. I’ve taken a strong stand against splogging, shilling, and comment spamming – I’ve been quoted in the Washington Post, have very publicly exposed some shilling schemes, and have openly taken comment spammers to task (the pen is mightier, etc.). I think this all started about a week ago when I sent a warning message to someone who was shilling on my site and a few others I saw -- I think I rubbed them the wrong way and they figured they'd "show me".

Unfortunately, I’m not a household name (yet) that every blogger in the world just says, “Oh, that can’t really be him – he would never do that.” So I first learned about this when a pissed-off blogger e-mailed me and said “Thanks for spamming my blog. You guys obviously don’t know anything about how to market your book,” etc., etc. I’ve spent way too many hours building up a good reputation to have it damaged by some spammer/hacker with a beef against me.

So far, I only have two confirmed incidents of this. The first one had deleted the comment already and doesn’t have any of the information. Fortunately, the one I heard from today had saved everything and even took the time to go through his server log to tell me all kinds of useful information (raw IP address, visit behavior, etc.).

I’m trying to figure out how to best address this. Should I go public with a counter-PR campaign? Or privately try to find some more evidence first? How do I fight back? FTC? An attorney?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have faith that I will win out in this in the end because a) I’m right and they’re wrong, and b) I have friends who will stand up for me and they don’t.

Thanks in advance,

JS does not allow exporting raw text the way other systems do - the best I can get is to copy and paste each entry + info into a new plaintext file and follow MT's specs and import it in. However every time I do I get the times, categories, and titles imported - but no body copy.

Read the f'in manual but it doesn't tell me anything about how to troubleshoot a partially successful import - sent in an email to Six Apart for help but in the meantime I thought I'd ask the group, and see what y'all might have to say...

BTW, Journalspace is a great service - i'm only moving because I wanted my own domains and not subdomains of JS, that's all. Other than that theyr'e fine.

Hey Guys,

Incase you haven't heard about it before - Canada's annual fest of design and media culture is happening in May and this year is focused on Modding / Mod culture etc...

For the fest, we've organised a cool competition looking for submissions that are modifications of technology products - if I wasn't an organiser I would submit an entry for Joomla, because I think CMS' these days are inherently built to be modded etc... but if you're into a particular Open Source Software app/Blog platform/whatever and have changed it to suit your needs, or have developed something that is modd-able, check out our website at http://www.dx.org/digifest and download the '2006 Telefilm Call for Submissions' -

**Remember: the deadline for submission is Jan 31st*** so there's not that much time left, but the application is simple and winners will get a chance to come to Toronto and present!

I'm sure there are bloggers that have hacked WordPress etc.. to do cool things that are non-stock and we'd love to hear from you.

This is a win for bloggers. This sneaky company that offered "free background music" for bloggers was actually loading spyware adservers on their computers when they downloaded the little music program.

From CIO Today:

"The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), armed with an injunction from a U.S. District Court, has shut down Enternet Media, Inc., and filed a lawsuit against that company and its affiliates for running an operation that used the lure of free browser upgrades and other free computer software to download spyware and adware on consumers' computers. Enternet Media is the creator and distributor of EliteBar.
The FTC announced the lawsuit Thursday after investigating the spyware operation for the last eight to 10 months with assistance from Microsoft, Webroot Software , and Google . The court has frozen the organization's assets, pending a further hearing. The FTC will seek to bar the deceptive and unfair practices permanently and require the operators to give up their ill-gotten gains.

The court also halted the deceptive downloads of an affiliate who helped spread the malicious software by offering bloggers free background music, according to the FTC. The music code downloaded by the bloggers was bundled with a program that flashed warnings to consumers who visited the blog sites about the security of their computer systems. Consumers who clicked to upgrade their computers would end up with machines infected with spyware.

"Everybody has to cheer when somebody like this gets caught," said Yankee Group analyst Laura DiDio. "Over the years, these types of crooks have gotten more clever in taking advantage of consumers. It's good that the federal authorities are on to them and finally enacting laws to deal with this issue."

Complaint Specs

The FTC's complaint alleges that the defendants' software code, once installed, tracked consumers' Internet activities and changed consumers' preferred home-page settings. The agency further alleges that the software code inserted new toolbars onto consumers' browsers and also inserted a large side frame or "window" into consumers' browsers to display ads.

The rogue software also displays pop-up ads on consumers' computer screens even when Internet browsers are not activated. In addition, the agency alleges that once the spyware was loaded on consumers' computers, it interfered with the functioning of the computer and was difficult for consumers to uninstall or remove.

According to the FTC complaint, the defendants' Web sites caused installation boxes to pop up on consumers' computer screens. One variation of the installation scheme offered several freeware applications, including music files, cell phone ringtones, photographs, wallpaper, and song lyrics. Another installation variation displayed boxes warning that consumers' Internet browsers are defective and claiming to offer free browser upgrades or security patches. Consumers who downloaded the supposed freeware or security upgrades did not receive what they were promised but instead got spyware infections.

Trail of Evidence

Webroot officials identified the EliteBar as a piece of adware that has repeatedly been on the company's list of top-ten threats. "Elitebar is a particularly deceptive piece of adware that generally propagates through the use of seemingly innocent dialog boxes, various social engineering methods, or through a java scripting error," said Richard Stiennon, vice president of threat research for Webroot. "Using their authority under the FTC act to prosecute unfair and deceptive acts that harm consumers, the FTC's case is an important step to help stem the ever-growing problem of spyware and adware."

The FTC named several defendants in the case involving the exploitive code: Enternet Media, Inc.; Conspy & Co., Inc.; Lida Rohbani, also known as Linda Rohhani and Lida Hakimi; Nima Hakimi; Baback (Babak) Hakimi, also known as Bobby Rohbani and Bobby Hakimi, individually and doing business as Networld One, all based in California.

The FTC identified the various adware and spyware components as Search Miracle, Miracle Search, EM Toolbar, EliteBar, and Elite Toolbar. The defendants do business as Enternet Media, Inc., Enternet, www.searchmiracle.com, www.c4tdownload.com, and www.cash4toolbar.com. The affiliate, also charged in the complaint, is Nicholas C. Albert, doing business as Iwebtunes and www.iwebtunes.com, based in Ohio.

Consumers may contact the FTC to report their experiences with the defendants by sending an e-mail to enternetmedia@ftc.gov or by calling 202-326-2992 to leave messages. "

Hi everyone!

I would like to introduce my newest blog, Discuss It - http://www.discuss-it.net

So what is this new site all about? Hmmm… that’s a tough one. I am not even sure myself, and I created the site. Here’s what I do know: I want Discuss It to be a place where ideas, news, and issues can be discussed in an open and mature way. I have created a small group of panelists who will write about a particular topic. What they say may be thought-provoking, infuriating, inspirational, and/or controversial. That’s where you the reader come in.

I want the visitors of Discuss It to become active participants in it. Don’t like something you’ve read? Leave a comment letting us know your take. Find something you agree with? Let us and others know. Go back often to see how others have replied to what you’ve said. Explain your opinions, defend your views, and take part in the discussion. Every post will have its own RSS feed for the comments on it that you can subscribe to.

Will I solve all the world’s problems through this site? Probably not. But by exposing yourself to new ideas and other people’s opinions and in turn letting them know where you stand, maybe, just maybe we can build a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities that our society is presented with today.

Please stop by Discuss It and let me know what you think!

Hi all

Am rather new to the Tribe, been on Ecademy for a few years and also blog now at the blogsite related to my fourth book. I have been surprised to see most clubs here at the Tribe seem very passive/inactive, but happy to see activity at least here at the Bloggers club.

I think members here will be interested in my latest book, out three weeks ago here in London. I am a specialist in the wireless space, having written three hardcover bestsellers in that area already, lecturing at Oxford etc. This latest book expands my focus more to all digital communities and their disruptive effects to business. The 274 page hardcover book, co-authored by British branding/advertising guru Alan Moore, the CEO of SMLXL, is the world's first book to look at all digitally connected communities, from bloggers to rating systems, dating services, gaming, virtual worlds, and of course the cellphone based "smart mobs."

We discuss over 100 real business cases from all types of industries, ranging from the IT/high tech/telecoms side such as Apple, Verizon, Nokia, Orange etc., all the way to the non-digital worlds such as Coca Cola, Adidias, Tesco, Boeing (yes, airplanes) etc. We have 13 case studies from the leading countries and industries around the world.

The book costs 30 UKP / 50 USD / 45 Euro, and is already available via Amazon's UK site. The USA launch will be later this Summer. Anyone can see more about the book, including some excerpts, and links to the related blogsite etc, and of course can already order the book now for worldwide delivery at my publisher's website at www.futuretext.com

If anyone here at the Tribe would like to read an excerpt of the book, I will be happy to send the full foreword by Coca Cola, and one full chapter from the book as a pdf file. Also if any of you happen to have blogsites, websites, or write for any periodicals, we are interested to supply you with further materials from the book for articles, interviews, book reviews, excerpts etc. Send me e-mail at my regular address which is tomi@tomiahonen.com

I will of course also be most happy to discuss the book and its themes, and answer any questions here at this club/thread.

As the first book in the world to look at how businesses can capitalise on the emerging trend of connected customer communities, this book seems to have hit the very exposed nerve of all in senior management - we need to understand the customer, but that customer is suddenly changing, and changing fast. My book provides a roadmap on how to navigate communities to your profits.

PS and obviously for this club, blogging is one of the main themes throughout the book.

Dominate !

Is my thinking wrong here? I have always considered deep linking to audio, video, or even large picture files as stealing bandwidth from the host of those files. When someone deep links to one of my video files, they are bypassing my blog completely while I still get charged with the bandwidth usage (and yes, I have plently of bandwidth- that's not the issue).
As an independent daily news site, we're finding blogs very helpful. Each news story or editorial that's likely to get reader response is immediately assigned a Blog, for the author to host. This system helps make article/editorial writers more accountably, as they don't have to wait for Letters to the Editor or a rebuttal response to be published. There can be a flurry of immediate reader response. Both the news headlines and related Blogs are streamed over RSS feeds.

Front page, right column, we're digesting in both select blog and podcast feeds. Also streaming in a great calendar tool.

Check the main nav bar to SunBlogs and PodCasts for sub-set RSS digest pages.

*a server (hostmysite.com)

*a blog on LiveJournal that is easy enough to attach to my profile (so I've done that. no problem.)

*a blog on blotterati.com. it doesn't seem to feed. it is located at blotterati.com/weblog/blog.htm. it is an .htm extension and has no feed capability.

What I can't seem to figure out is how to create one blog that lives on the blotterati.com site (hosted by hostmysite.com) that I can syndicate via a Feed and load to my tribe.net profile page. I seem to have all the right ingredients I am just pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to put them all together. And, in the meantime, I just keep posting to my livejournal blog 'cos it's easy. I'd just like something a bit more personalized than just a live journal blog.
Suggestions? (Thanks in advance.)

Hello Bloggers
I am a novice blogger with some questions that I hope you can help me with. I am in a band Kaura, www.kaura.com, who will be travelling to Thailand, India, Tibet, Bali, and Cambodia for 3 months to write music, buy instruments, and get inspired. We are bringing laptops to record music, digital cameras, and video camera's which we plan to edit little 3 minute films with. We wanted to know if there are any sites out there that would make it easy for us to host video, audio, and photos that we could upload from internet cafes in these countries. Any information or help would be highly appreciated. Thanks
Ben

1. How much time do you typically spend writing a blog entry?

2. I'm Mac user and am also wondering what's the best way to get the blog sites I'm reading on a regular basis. Seems like just going through my bookmarks is too time consuming, especially when click to a site and see that it still hasn't been updated. I've been trying to find about this thing called RSS feed? Does that help in reading regular post? Where do I go to set it up?

One interesting concept that's raised in their implementation and something that Marc Canter often talks about, is the idea of subscribing to parts of a person. In other words, subscribing to a person's blog is one thing you could do, but what if I wanted to subscribe only to their recommendations, or the pictures they post, or the events they create (or will be attending)? Wouldn't this be interesting? In other words, decouple what it is that interests us about people and only follow that. Anyone else think that the concept has legs?
