Shout - out for a little help here.

I've started my online publishing at : rootmag.typepad.com

Typepad is nearly impossible for me to customize. I'm NOT a programmer though so I need something a little simple.

Before I launch in serious way to attract advertising, I need to figure out if I should switch over entirely to somewhere else.

Things I need online will be:

Interactive Calendar - for upcoming events and classes
Featured Product Space

Something similar to what I have now with the photography too...

So confused and frustrated at the moment so please excuse the rambling and THANK YOU ALL in advance!

  • I've used both Wordpress and MT. When I have friends who are totally new to blogging ask for advice I recommend WP because it's very easy to launch and there are a lot of nice skins for it...but if you plan on doing pro blogging I would recommend something entirely different. MT is cool with lots of features but I found it to be buggy and a pain to customize. I've now moved on to Expression Engine. Their Core script is free, but you can upgrade to the full program once you're ready. I just now started using it but so far I'm happy....I really needed something I could recommend to my clients that require an integrated mailing list and message board.

The one thing I didn't like about WP is that every time they upgrade 80% of the plugins need to be upgraded as well and since this is all done by pvarious volunteer peeps it doesn't happen quickly (if at all).

If you're looking at blogging to generate revenue you'll get to a point where you want site maintenance to be smooth, and to have one registration for all viewers (instead of making them register over and over to get your mailing list, or comments, or anything else). That's why I ended up going with EE. They're also working on an ecommerce module as well.

Just my 2 cents. Sometimes you simply have to dig in and test things out to see what works best for your situation.

I actually took the plunge and used Movable Type installed at my webservice provider. Not for the faint of heart and the customization was a bitch at first.

But after I got the webmaster toolbar extension for firefox it was not so bad. Also, one thing I found was that there was more online help for MT/TP than for Word Press, but that may have been a function of Google more than anything else.

For me what helped was being a paid up user of the MT software I was entitled to custom help and it helped me get my two sites up. They are still a little stock , but I have also found you can always ask another blogger using MT or TP about their code adn they'll usually tell you how they made their site look cool.
