I have some various videos I host on my blog. Recently I discovered another site was deep linking to my videos (that is, they linked directly to the video files and not to the blog page where the links were). I contacted the person who posted the deep links and asked them to change the links to the blog page instead. A got a very sarcastic reply back from them (although they did comply).
Is my thinking wrong here? I have always considered deep linking to audio, video, or even large picture files as stealing bandwidth from the host of those files. When someone deep links to one of my video files, they are bypassing my blog completely while I still get charged with the bandwidth usage (and yes, I have plently of bandwidth- that's not the issue).
What do you think?

Re: Deep Linking
09/12I think you are completely correct. And - if you don't want them using your band width- whether you have enough or not- you could also put a note on your blog that your media files can be downloaded and place on the websites of others with complete attribution and a link to the original source - and to write you for permission, attribution details and to obtain the file from you.
People who get pissy about having good manners - I would deny them permission! -

Re: Deep Linking
09/12I had people hotlinking to my pics, eating a lot of my bandwidth. I asked nicely, never got responses... So I stopped posting pics & updating my site becuase my hosting company sucks ass! with no support to stop hotlinking in the .htaccess file. I had problems with a PHP script that I found, but it never worked correctly. Eventually I just got pissed as all hell debating about taking the entire thing down...

Re: Deep Linking
09/15I posted a similar problem on the All Zines tribe: zine-fans.tribe.net/thread/0...229a797f0 . If that link doesn't work, the tribe is at zine-fans.tribe.net/ and the post is called Bandwidth Bandits.
Basically, I spew my own Webzine (also woefully in need of an update...apparently I took much of the summer off) and many a wank has been linking to my images instead of simply stealing them fair and square...like I did.
I figure anyone who produces a blog, zine, or other type of site knows enough to realize that they are stealing precious bandwidth. So I don't even bother asking. I assume intent.
With that in mind, my standard response has been to rename the photo on my site and then upload a most unpleasent image for the photo they have linked to. I have found that mildly offensive declarations of bandwidth thievery work best.
Though a few bloggers have gone months without noticing. I mean, I've quadrupled the size of the image so it takes up the entire page. I've replaced it with even more offensive content. And they just leave it there.
Which tells me two things. First, no one is reading their blogs, for someone would surely email them a comment. I know I get emails whenever a page is down, as a few of mine currently are. And second, these clowns aren't even reading the stuff they post, because they would take some action if they saw it. Kind of sad, when you think about it.
Anyway, that's my suggestion. Come up with an image that notifies viewers that the blogger is stealing content and/or bandwidth. Or, as I may do if I can figure out how to make the image linkable, create an ad for your site that you can use instead...something along the lines of "why waste your time on a site that steals it's content...come see the real deal." -

Re: Deep Linking
09/16I've done stuff like that... After changing image names they still continue to steal the images... Plus there are many sites doing it to me. A few sites I see them eating the bandwidth, but I'm unable to see what images they're actually stealing.
It's like I fix 1 bandit, I find another, fix that one, then find another, fix that one, find another, fix that, find another, etc, etc...
But I because of this, problems & lack of "how to do things properly" from my host, and other reasons, I just lost interest in the entire idea of blogging...
